Dear Friends,
I love telling stories. Whether it's the Brooklyn Bridge, the Civil War, baseball, or jazz, the process of making documentary films has shown me that the world is full of endlessly fascinating people whose stories might otherwise go untold. This work is my joy. That it has the power to edify, entertain, and move spirits has been truly fulfilling.
The story I share with you today is that of Bread & Roses. For 29 years, this great organization has been uplifting the spirits of wonderful, fascinating people whose stories are being overlooked or temporarily silenced.
If you have an elderly relative in a nursing home, have visited a friend in a hospital, or know a youngster in a special needs school, you know how hungry these individuals can be for beauty in their lives. You also know how grateful they are when they are remembered, visited, and celebrated.
By producing over 500 live performances each year for audience members like these, Bread & Roses uses the timeless beauty of art to ensure that the elderly, the abused, the troubled, and the disadvantaged remember the feeling of being a part of, and not apart from, family, friends, and community.
Documentary films are my contribution to the arts. Free, live performances to the isolated are the gifts of Bread & Roses. Our stories intersect because they are both about honoring the importance of art to educate, stimulate, and heal.
I urge you to become part of our shared story.
Please do as I have done and support Bread & Roses. I thank you in advance for your generosity and support of the arts.
Thank you.
