Support our Fall campaign!
Dear Friends,
Thirty years ago our friend Mimi Fariña founded Bread & Roses to bring free, live entertainment
to individuals who live in institutions. We were among Mimi’s earliest supporters
and we are writing to ask you to please join us by supporting Bread & Roses today.
We first became volunteers for Bread & Roses in 1977 at Soledad Prison. Accompanied by
Mimi, Joan Baez, Bill Graham and others, we provided the first live, outside entertainment
the facility allowed in almost four years. It was an emotion-filled encounter, one in
which we confirmed with Mimi a shared passion for the power of live music to help
create a better world.
Since that time, the work Deborah and I have pursued together has taken us around the
world many times and our own philanthropy has evolved. Like Bread & Roses, we share
our time and talent to help those among us who live at risk, under-represented
and disadvantaged. We believe in a brighter future and know that we must accelerate
equality, justice, compassion, beauty, grace and excellence, kindness and gentleness in the
here and now.
Mimi shared our values and we miss her. We celebrate her vision and passion, both of
which live on through the steadfast and caring work of Bread & Roses. In her first newsletter, Mimi reported that she and her circle of friends presented 40 shows to 800 individuals.
Last year, Bread & Roses uplifted the spirits of 23,000 individuals
with 500 performances. The numbers have changed dramatically, but the mission and
spirit of the organization today are as Mimi first envisioned. Each child, teen, adult or
elder served by Bread & Roses is embraced with respect, compassion and kindness.
Our commitment to serving humanity inspires us to support the work of Bread & Roses.
Please join us and give generously today.
Your gift of any amount creates joy and changes lives.
Muchas gracias,
Deborah and Carlos
