Bread & Roses Presents is thrilled by the participation in our second annual “Oh Say, Can You Sing” contests for both the San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s. Congratulations to winners MUSAIC for the Giants and Cathryn Flores for the Oakland A’s. Second-place winners Susan Zelinsky and Felicia Foster each won five hours of recording time at Fantasy Studios. A number of our volunteers and new supporters participated in the contest and nearly $20,000 was raised. A special thanks to our friends at the San Francisco Giants, Oakland A’s, Nelson and Salesforce for sponsoring and promoting this year’s contest.
First Place Winners for the Anthem Contests
On September 29, 2016, San Francisco men’s a cappella ensemble MUSAIC sang the national anthem at the SF Giants game. Under the direction of Linda Noble Brown, the men sang The Star Spangled Banner specially arranged for MUSIAC by Bret Silverman. They were cheered on by their tribe of friends and family from the stands as well as over 41,000 Giants fans.
MUSAIC’s music holds roots in classical choral traditions, though their repertoire includes a variety of unique a cappella songs. We especially loved the video they included on their contest page of Queen’s “Bohemian Rapsody.” MUSAIC raised more donations than any other contestant with the support of their fans and their promotion on social media. We are looking forward to sharing the fun and talent of MUSAIC with some of our Bread & Roses audiences in the future.
On August 14, 2016, winner Cathryn Flores sang The Star Spangled Banner on our behalf at an Oakland A’s game. Cathryn is a talented 15-year-old singer from Fremont who plays piano, guitar and ukulele. A budding performer, she sang before the A’s game with poise and strength. It was heartwarming to see such strong support from her parents as they watched in the stands.
Cathryn has won singing competitions in various categories including musical theater, pop and classical. In 2012 she won first place in the Jr. Division of Fremont's Got Talent competition. She can also sing in Spanish! We look forward to seeing the growth of this young singer.
Second Place Winners for Fantasy Studios Recording Time
Susan Zelinsky, second-place winner for the SF Giants contest, has been a Bread & Roses volunteer since 2000 and has a gift for connecting with our young audiences. Susan entered the contest with her two children Ruby and Rachel, who “have been singing together since before they could speak.” Felicia Foster, second-place winner for the Oakland A’s contest, is a preschool teacher at a non-profit organization who loves bringing music into the classroom. She believes that music is important in our lives and our education. We look forward to hearing our winners’ recordings at Fantasy Studios!
We also congratulate and thank all of our contest participants, many of whom have been long-time Bread & Roses volunteers and supporters, and welcome our new supporters who entered the contest. Our contest participants included: Vandana Bali, Natalie Best, Lucia Comnes, Betsy Curtis, Cole Evers, Terry Foster, Peter Herbert, Shelby Lanterman, Clyde Leland, Michelle Macasero, Andy Mack, Molly Mcfadden, Neil O'Neill, James Patrick Regan, Megan Slankard and Michelle Talley. Thanks to the contestants for your enthusiastic promotion of the contest as well as our mission of healing live music.
We particularly enjoyed hearing the story of contestant Cole Evers. He found our contest because he has a dream of singing the national anthem at every Major League Baseball stadium. At the age of 13, his art teacher helped him record a demo and send it to every Major League team. So far he has sung at Wrigley Field. We love how music can unite us in these special ways!
This is our second year of a successful contest which now looks to be an annual event. Special thanks to last year’s winners Laura Benward and Damond Moodie. We hope to see even more people enter our contest next year to showcase their renditions of the national anthem and support the healing power of live music in over 600 Bread & Roses concerts throughout the year!
