At their impressive headquarters in downtown San Francisco, Bread & Roses Presents was invited to “pass the music” at Salesforce on September 22 to educate their creative team about our mission. J.D. Swartz from Salesforce shared that it was a welcome break from intensive planning for their Dreamforce conference held every year in early October.
He introduced Bread & Roses Executive Director Dave Perron who gave an update about our organization and noted that today’s performer Megan Slankard is one of over 1,000 volunteers who help bring music in over 600 annual concerts around the Bay Area to audiences of children, adults and seniors who are isolated.
We are honored to have Salesforce as a collaborative partner. Last year, we provided music for a day at the main outdoor stage at Dreamforce. This year their creative marketing team has signed on to help Bread & Roses with a redesign of our website. Peter Crosby of Salesforce wrote about their skills-based volunteer efforts in a recent company blog “Want to Boost the Impact of Volunteering Your Time? Volunteer Your Talent, Too.” He talked about the recent “hackathon” where Salesforce and Bread & Roses staff came together “To accomplish in a few hours what could normally take a small organization weeks” and “make a huge impact for them in a single day.” Check back for the results of this exciting project in the near future.
The team enjoyed root beer floats and the chance to hear Megan perform her authentic contemporary acoustic music in an intimate setting. She told the crowd, “Music is a driving force of life…Your company is the coolest place to play a concert." Everyone answered by whistling along when she played Paul Simon’s “Me & Julio Down By the School Yard.”
Megan played a spirited set of original songs and familiar tunes. A nationally touring performer, she spoke from the heart about the benefits she has received as a volunteer playing music for Bread & Roses isolated audiences for thirteen years. In addition, as a contestant in our recent “Oh Say Can You Sing Contest,” she raised money for our organization. Dave also thanked Salesforce for help promoting this year’s contest, where supporters competed to raise funds to sing the national anthem at a SF Giants or Oakland A’s game.
One of the attendees won the raffle for a free Bread & Roses Backstage 365 Club membership. Learn more about the club which offers members an opportunity to go behind the scenes at institutional concerts (not normally open to the public) and other exclusive events.
