Bread & Roses Reaches Out to Successive Generations
by
Marian Hubler, February 23, 2005
In
celebration of our 30th anniversary, Bread & Roses is reaching out to young
adult performers and audiences by participating in a series of “Nights
in Your Neighborhood” at various venues around the Bay. Our goal in
having a presence at these concerts is to spread the word about our mission
so we can attract the next generation of performers, volunteers, donors
and board members.
On February 10, 2005, Bread & Roses participated in a concert at the Independent,
a San Francisco music showcase, featuring Garrin Benfield, Spencer Day and
JP Cutler. Garrin has been a Bread & Roses volunteer performer for a number
of years, bringing his heart-felt original songs and superb guitar-playing
to many Bread & Rose audiences including special needs schools and rehabilitation
facilities.
On Saturday, January 22, 2005, Global Fusion Music and 142 Throckmorton
Theatre in Mill Valley presented a community concert of world-infused jazz
and free improvisation by "Hemispheres." A portion of the proceeds from
this show benefited Bread & Roses. Global percussionist Ian Dogole was featured
along with Paul McCandless on woodwinds, Bill Douglas on double bass and
bamboo flutes, Sheldon Brown on woodwinds and special guest Frank Martin
on piano. A regular Bread & Roses volunteer performer, Ian has thrilled
diverse Bread & Roses audiences, both young and old, playing his unique
blend of instruments from throughout the world.
Accomplished vocalist and songwriter Austin Willacy performed for the first
of these "Nights in Your Neighborhood" on Thursday, September 30, 2004 at
the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley with his band: Jeff Arziejewski on drums,
Kenan Malak on lead guitar and Spencer Murray on bass. Austin has performed
as a volunteer for Bread & Roses for many institutional audiences through
the years -- as a solo artist playing his unique brand of intelligent melodic
pop, as a member of a capella favorites The House Jacks and as musical director
for the acclaimed teen a capella chorus 'Til Dawn.
More “Nights in Your Neighborhood” are planned at larger venues
in various locations throughout the Bay Area with our volunteer performers
who are "rising stars". We want to identify more up-and-coming artists who
might want to join our roster of volunteer performers and give back to their
community through Bread & Roses.
If everyone in our community could reach out to just one young friend to
see if they might be interested in becoming involved with Bread & Roses
as volunteers or supporters we can ensure the legacy of our mission
for future generations. Please let us know if you have any ideas to help
us in this effort by emailing info@breadandroses.org or calling (415) 945-7120.
