to the Bread & Roses website.
Here
you will get a glimpse of the magic that touches the hearts and souls of
people isolated in Bay Area institutions--all because of the performances
that we produce every day.
It is an honor for me to serve as the leader of this well-established and
vibrant organization. There is no other organization that does what we do,
has done it for as long as we have, and is as effective in caring for such
a broad base of performing arts volunteers.
Mimi Fariña founded Bread & Roses in 1974 and served as Executive
Director for 24 years. Lana Severn served as deputy director for 16 years
and as the executive director for one year before she retired. I joined
the agency in July 2000 as its third executive director.
While the mission is the same today as it was in 1974, we would like to
serve even more people who are shut away from society in insitutions or
otherwise. In order to do that we are depending on donors, volunteers, board,
and staff to continue their support for Bread & Roses and for new supporters
to join us. With your help we can bring to our audiences those healing moments
and, if only for a brief time, a basic human sense of vitality and hope.
We cherish our volunteer performers, our volunteer show hosts, and our donors.
They make it possible for the board and staff to guide the work of the organization.
For donors, Bread & Roses is an excellent "investment" because
of the opportunity to leverage your dollars with volunteer hours. Every
dollar donated allows us to deliver $3 worth of services. For volunteers,
performers, and hosts, Bread & Roses provides an opportunity to witness
human joy and to experience the satisfaction of having touched the hearts
of people who need it most in the isolated quarters of our society.
