Two
Special Gifts Make a World of Difference
by Elizabeth Share
At
Bread & Roses, we rely on gifts of all sizes to meet our
goal of bringing the healing power of live art to children and adults in
need. This year, we received two extraordinary gifts for which we would
like to give thanks.
We received a $100,000 challenge grant from The Dennis and Susan
Gilardi Fund of the Marin Community Foundation which, with your
help, we were able to match. As a result, we are now able to implement several
aspects of our strategic plan that will make us more efficient operationally,
help us increase our services to the East Bay and increase our recruitment
of up-and-coming artists.
In November we received a very
generous gift from an anonymous donor.
We hope that our unseen angel is reading
this newsletter and will again accept our
sincere thanks for this very meaningful
gift. Your encore support makes a huge
difference.
2007 Benefit for Hope and Healing
We are thrilled to thank the attendees and sponsors of The 2007
Benefit for Hope and Healing for making this year’s benefit at
Teatro ZinZanni our most successful ever. The evening was
such fun — thanks in large part to Broadway’s own Billy Flynn,
better known in the Bay Area as the incredibly versatile Huey Lewis.
Huey and his co-star Yamil Borges enchanted us, reprising
four numbers from the Broadway hit Chicago.
Special thanks to our dear friend and “mountain of love” Michael
Pritchard for introducing the show and to performers Christine
Deaver, Gregangelo & the Velocity Dancers, Sabine Rieck, Big Lou’s Polka
Casserole, Les Petites Frères and the Teatro ZinZanni Orchestra
for creating such a dazzling ensemble performance.
A very special thanks to the Platinum Sponsor of the Hope and Healing
Benefit, The Dennis and Susan Gilardi Fund of the Marin Community Foundation;
Silver Sponsors: Marin Community Foundation and Sony
Computer Entertainment America; and Bronze Sponsors: House
of Pennathur, Susan and Matt Mackowski, Laurie Angel McGuinness
and NelsonJobs.com. We tip our hats to the incomparable
Teatro ZinZanni management and staff for their fabulous
collaboration in producing this one-of-a-kind show.
This year’s benefit auction was fast, fun and fabulously successful. Our
deepest gratitude to our giant-hearted, highbidding, auction-winning friends
for your extraordinary generosity. Thank you Sue and George Bull,
Nancy Conrad, Shawn DelGrande, Jill and Steven Fugaro, Nancy and Everett
Golden, Anna Hawken, Kathy and Rick Kimball, Debbie Matthies, Joan and Juan
Miller, and Stacy and Mark Nelson.
Our deepest thanks to Shahla and Ron Cowan, Lenny Eber, Sudha Pennathur,
Carole Robinson and Zane Gresham, Irene Scully
and the more than 30 incredible couples and individuals who joined the action
to generously pledge “Fund-ANeed” gifts. Your generosity dazzled us and
we are delighted to be producing great shows in your honor.
Gratifying Response to
Our Spring Appeal
All of us were touched by the stories shared and gifts made in honor of
Al Baez, Sr., who died recently. Al was the father of our
founder, the late Mimi Fariña.
Many of
Al’s friends
from around
the country
wrote to share
memories of
his kind heart, warm leadership and
devoted service to others.
Heartfelt thanks to Julie and Ken Burns, Daniel Collins, Evan Duffy,
Concepcíon and Irwin Federman, Kathy and Rick Kimball, Susan Pritzker
and all of you whose gifts are enabling us to produce shows for youth in
Al’s honor.
Endowment
For helping to ensure our future through their generous gifts to our endowment,
we offer special thanks to Jacqui and Christian Erdman
and to The Dennis and Susan Gilardi Fund of the Marin Community
Foundation.
Foundation and
Corporate Gifts
Our thanks to the following foundations and corporations that made generous
gifts during this period: Bank of Marin Community Fund, The Bernard
Osher Foundation, Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, Crescent Porter Hale
Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Thomas J. Long Foundation,
Macy’s West, Marin Community Foundation, NAMM, Pacific Union/GMAC Real
Estate, San Francisco Foundation, Irene S. Scully Foundation, Silva Watson
Moonwalk Fund, String Letter Publishing, The Swig Foundation
and Tides Foundation.
The following individuals and families made major gifts from donor-advised
funds: Baele Family Trust, Jamie and Don Friend, Marcia and John
Goldman, and Lisa and John Pritzker.

And finally, special thanks to the members of our Board of Directors
for their priceless contributions of time, treasure and talent.
