Board Changes

Sausalito resident Kathleen Grogan is the newest member of the Bread & Roses Board of Directors and also has been named to our Finance Committee. A Certified Public Accountant, she is a partner with Hood & Strong.

Former Board Chair Mark Nelson of NelsonJobs.com has returned for another term. Says Mark, “Over the past 30 years or so, Bread & Roses has played a significant role in the development, enhancement and growth of countless individuals. I stand among them and feel fortunate to be invited to serve a second time.”

A hearty thanks to former Board members Noah Griffin, David A. Lusterman and Susan Mackowski. Noah will continue as a community member of the Marketing & Public Relations Committee, David on our Development Committee and Susan on the Program Committee.

David and Noah are also volunteer performers for Bread & Roses institutional shows – David as a member of The Beatles tribute band The Bubs and Noah as a polished and engaging jazz vocalist.

Susan Mackowski of San Francisco has supported Bread & Roses in various ways: as Board member and benefit event hostess. We are blessed that all are continuing to support us.

Marin County resident Sean Ahearn has joined our team as Benefit Events Producer. He has more than 20 years of experience in the music, arts and entertainment fields, most recently serving as Programming & Development Director for Harmony Productions in Sonoma.

Lisa Starbird of San Anselmo is now working as Program Assistant to the Program Department and our benefit events producer. She previously worked as Program Administrator for the Center for Attitudinal Healing in Sausalito and as a lighting designer in the music industry for touring rock bands. Welcome also to Janet Lewis from San Anselmo, who is now serving as our contract accountant, replacing Vivian Largen, former finance coordinator.

Congratulations to Carolyn Gauthier who has been promoted to Program Director, and to Kurt Huget who is now a fullfledged Producer. A grateful and heartfelt farewell to Carole Robinson, who served for 10 years as Producer and Program Director. She continues to support our work as a donor and friend.

In Memoriam

Bread & Roses extends sympathy to the families of three of our volunteers who passed away recently – Rob Robinson, Leonard Kingsley and Jann Levinson. A talented jazz pianist and vocalist, Rob always connected warmly with our audiences. Leonard, a Bread & Roses donor, was a clarinet player who sat in with the legendary group The Soulmates, headed by the late David Hudnut. Singer-pianist Jann was known for her original songs and joyous laughter.

Public Relations

Thanks to “Everyday Angels” anchor Jan Yanehiro, Bread & Roses was recently featured on the cable TV show. Jan interviewed Executive Director Cassandra Flipper as well as members of Ross Commons on-site at The Tamalpais in Greenbrae as they performed a Bread & Roses show for residents.

Students from Sir Francis Drake High School’s ComAcad program recently completed a video for Bread & Roses that can now be seen on our website. Congratulations to volunteer performer Denali Gillespie and her talented colleagues.

Kurt Huget was featured as a guest on the “West Coast Live” radio show in early May as part of our first annual “May Around the Bay” promotion. Thanks to Kathi Goldmark and Sedge Thompson for this opportunity.

Multimedia artist and photographer Peter Merts recently had an exhibit of Bread & Roses photos at Compass Point Nonprofit Services in San Francisco.

Bread & Roses also participated for the first time in the Marin Human Race this year. Walkers raised more than $1,200 for Bread & Roses, and singer/guitarist Elaine Dempsey and friends entertained along the way.
